Life as We Live It ... on the road with Coleen and Bob

Where In the World Are Coleen and Bob?
(And Just What Are They Doing?)

Merry Christmas to you! I hope you are having a glorious Christmas filled with peace, joy, and love.

We're being snowbirds this winter. Alaska winters are beautiful -- but cold. We decided it was time for a change. We don't have specific plans for where we are going or how long we will stay. Our destination park is uncertain, but we're thinking it may be in Port Isabel, Texas.

We are now in Lafayette. Louisiana.

I have pages and pages of notes that I've taken so far on this trip. Driving the Alcan when it is covered in snow and ice is an adventure. Instead of our fully outfitted travel trailer, we are in an older motorhome, and that has presented some challenges. This trip has included some amazing things so far, including four and a half million Christmas lights at Silver Dollar City.

Stay tuned for more of our adventures. I'll be adding pictures and articles to the website. Stop by and see more of what we've been up to these past weeks.

Wherever you are in your travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

Campground Review

Acadiana Park, a Gem of a City Park Campground in Lafayette, LA

Acadiana Park draws us in because of its calm and quietness. We first went to this city campground because it was easy to find and fairly inexpensive. We return because the RV park is peaceful, not crowded, and still the best deal in town

RV Life and Travel Tip

LED stick up lights are handy for RV use. These are the kind that operate on batteries and require no wiring. They are also inexpensive -- we picked up a package of three for less than $5.00. One advantage to using them is that it saves on your RV house battery. Another advantage is that you can easily mount them where you need light. We put one where we can reach it while laying in bed.

Full-time RVer's Profile

Living the Dream of Travel

~ from J.R. Swaim

The dream of travel began stirring many years ago in my youth, as I watched the Walt Disney nature films, "Wagon Train," and other old television westerns and frontier shows. I wondered what it was like out there in the wilderness just beyond my grasp and realized it was no further away than my imagination.

We re-discover our country finding those hidden places and seeing all there is to see. We lift the curtain on conventional American history, and learn it's maybe a little different than was taught in the school text books that I recall.

South Dakota Annual State Park Passes

The 2011 South Dakota State Park annual park entrance licenses are now available. When camping in SD state parks, a park entrance fee is required in addition to camping fees. The price of the annual pass is $28.

The 2011 license features an image of cavalry re-enactors at Fort Sisseton Historic State Park. Fort Sisseton, an 1864 frontier fort, is one of many historically and culturally significant sites located in the South Dakota State Parks.

If you have a 2010 annual pass and will be in SD in the spring, hang on to it. The 2010 park entrance licenses (featuring a photo of two girls sledding) remain valid through May 20, 2011.

Your RV Life and Travel Questions Answered

Cold Weather RVing

~~ An RVer asks: How do we keep our waterlines from freezing?

~~ I answered in part: We have a "Winter RVing and Camping in the Cold, Northern States" section on the website that tells various things we've done. It answers "how-to" questions, as well as, "Why?" we would want to.

~~ Read the rest of my answer -- and offer additional advice -- on the website.
