Life As We Live It ... on the road with Coleen and Bob

Where In the World Are Coleen and Bob?
(And Just What Are They Doing?)

As we lingered over coffee this morning at a local truck stop restaurant, I eavesdropped on the conversation at a neighboring table. Actually, they were talking so loudly, that it was difficult not to overhear them. In fact, it was easier to hear them than it was to hear Bob who was sitting next to me.

Anyway, they were discussing Branson, Missouri. Bob and I were just there this past fall on our way to Texas. As we listened, we made quizzical faces at each other, the kind that say, "Did I hear that right?" "Did you see that at Branson?" "Is that how you remember that?' "That's not at all the way I remember it."

I find it amusing that their experience was so much different than ours. Or, perhaps more accurately, that they remember their experience in Branson so much differently than we do ours. We've come across this before, where we hear other people talking about someplace that we've been, and we wonder if they can really be talking about the same place.

We truly enjoyed Branson. The highlight of our time there was Silver Dollar City. We plan to return.

Today, we are in Rapid City, SD. These SD Black Hills are another area that we enjoy and find ourselves returning to time after time.

This issue of the newsletter features questions from you, our readers, along with my answers.

Wherever you are in your travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

Parking Near Salt Water

~~ Larry asks: We are worried about parking near salt water. Others have told us the above items are very corrosive to all metal parts, whether painted or not, including our tow vehicle, the lower frame of the fifth-wheel, our bicycles, etc.

~~ I answered in part: We spent six weeks parked three city blocks from the beach in Port Mansfield, Texas. Bob says it was slightly corrosive. It left a scum on the windows that we regularly washed off. There were places in town for washing boats. Those boat washes were outside, there to wash the salt-water and such off boats, and were situated to handle RV washing, as well. There are also mobile RV washing services.

RV Life and Travel Tip

Use your detergent to heavily treat dirty collars and stains on your laundry before you leave the RV to head to the laundromat. When you get to the laundromat, dump your clothes in the washer and you are good to go. No extra detergent or stain treatments needed.

Tag Number

~~ A website visitor asks: Tag number… What is it? Where is it? When are you required to know or show it for a 5th wheel?

~~ I answered in part: Some people refer to their vehicle license plate number as a "tag number." Instead of getting a license plate, they say they are getting "a tag."

It can also sometimes be used to help establish residency. Some utility companies, and businesses such as satellite TV services, may require proof that you live in a particular place. Being able to show your car registration, with your name and address on it, may satisfy that requirement.

Gas Stations - Good Ones

~~ Angela asks: Is there anyone who has started a list or website that has good gas stations - easy to pull in and out of with a trailer? There don't seem to be a lot. I know truck stops are good, but they are also very crowded because their gas prices are usually good.

~~ I answered in part: I don't know of a website that specifically carries information on which fuel stations are easily accessible by RVers. However, there are a couple of books available that may help you. I haven't used either of them, so don't take this as a personal recommendation.

Becoming a Work Camper

~~ A future RVer asks: My husband and I love to travel and are considering becoming work campers next year. When would be a good time to start looking for jobs for the next season? My husband has a home-based business. I will be graduating soon, to become a graphic/web designer, which I can take on the road, as well. Any other advise would be great.

~~ I answered in part: I'd wait until you get there. Others disagree with me. They think it is best to have a job lined up months ahead of time. Some go as far as to line up their next position a year in advance.
