Life As We Live It ... on the road with Coleen and Bob

Where In the World Are Coleen and Bob?
(And Just What Are They Doing?)

We're enjoying an extended stay in the Rapid City, SD area. I don't have any local campground reports, because we are staying at a friend's farm.

Bob's helping to rebuild an old Case steam traction engine. It's mechanical. It's preserving history. He's a happy camper.

Summer tourist attractions in the area are just starting to open for the season. We haven't made it to any of them yet this year. We'd like to take in some of the chuck wagon dinner and music shows if they open before we leave.

Wherever you are in your travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

RVing Tip

Make sure you have a pretty bud vase in your RV. You never know when someone will give you a single long-stemmed rose or pick you a beautiful wild flower.

Dandelion Wine, Full-time RVing, and Being True to Yourself

The view out my motorhome window today is a lush, back yard field of green, profusely dotted with bright yellow flowers. I happen to like dandelions. Mainly, it is because of their cheerful color.

~~ We don't always have the support of those around us. Our decision to go full-time RVing wasn't met with all roses. Read the rest of this article on the website.

Bob's Articles

Bob's your classic two-finger typist. I think he does a great job of getting some articles written for you. To make them easier to find, I've listed them all on one page.

I think with a bit of encouragement, we can get him to write a few more. Your comments and article suggestions are welcome.

To keep things from sliding around in your RV cabinets, put dividers in them. You can buy shelving dividers or make them from cardboard or paneling.

Your RV Life and Travel Questions Answered

Campgrounds in Winnipeg

~~ Judy asks: We will be visiting Winnipeg in June and July. We think we understand all that is needed to cross the border into Canada, but we are concerned about where to stay. We will be in a 40' motorhome with a toad. We want full hook-ups and a nice place. Do you have any suggestions for us?

~~ I answered in part: When it comes to making recommendations for campgrounds in Winnipeg, I'm no help. The best I can do is appeal to our readers for their suggestions.

Okay, our Canadian readers and those from the US who have traveled through the Winnipeg area… will you help? What RV parks do you recommend? And, if you have other suggestions for places RVers should stop or things they should see in the area, you are welcome to comment on those, as well.

~~ Post your recommendations and read what other readers added on the website.

Keeping Mice Out

~~ An RVer asks: I've heard there is a household spice I can put out to keep mice out of my trailer. Can you tell me what it is? Do you have any other ideas, or better yet, proven ways to keep mice from getting into recreational vehicles?

~~ I answered in part: Bay leaves, cayenne pepper, and cloves are also supposed to repel or keep out critters. Again, I haven't tried it, so can't say for sure. Somehow, the idea of putting food out for them seems counterproductive to me.

Okay, so what does work for sure? Give your trailer a good going over and look for small holes. During the daylight, look behind drawers and into the deep dark cabinets and cupboards. Look for light. If you see light coming in, you have a space where critters can enter.

RVing Tip

Carry a temporary emergency card with you that has the name, address, and telephone number of the campground where you are staying, as well as the contact information of a friend or family member on it. Update the card whenever you change campgrounds.

RV Life and Travel Tip

The best way to do a task can vary according to your RVing circumstances. For example, the most efficient way to heat canned soup or canned vegetables may usually be to use your microwave. However, if you are boondocking, it may be better to use your gas stove top.

Booking Sites

~~ Mike asks: My wife and I are considering booking a motorhome for three weeks. We are wanting to tour around the national parks. We do not have an itinerary and are hoping to follow our noses on an ad hoc basis. We have been informed that we will need to book all our sites in advance. Is this true? Also is it possible to wild camp?

~~ I answered in part: No, it is not true that you need to book sites in advance. The only time that I think you would need to have a camp site reservation is over holiday weekends. Even then, it probably is not necessary. I think you will have a much better time if you follow your plan to follow your noses!

RVing Tip

A quick way to change the look of your RV is to replace the curtains. For small windows, you can use cloth napkins or placemats. There's no sewing needed. You can flip the fabric over the curtain rod and pin it several places with small safety pins. This makes it easy and inexpensive to match your curtains with your table linens.
