Life As We Live It ... on the road with Coleen and Bob

Where In the World Are Coleen and Bob?
(And Just What Are They Doing?)

We're soon heading off to Cancun, Mexico, for ten days of sun and fun. We're staying at an all-inclusive, beach side resort. Champaign breakfasts, pina coladas made with fresh pineapple, room service, and beach service. This all expense paid trip is courtesy of Watkins, the grand prize in their Performance Rewards Program. It's a reward for 2011 being a very good year for our Watkins business. I intend to enjoy every minute of it.

One thing that we need to deal with when we leave the RV behind is pet care. Traveling in the motorhome or trailer, our critters are comfy and at home wherever we go. However, this trip means finding a boarding kennel and making arrangements for the furry member of our family. It's so easy RVing with them that it is easy to take that benefit for granted.

Bob's made more progress on the new-to-us motorhome project. He's written another update.

Wherever you are in your travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

Destination RVing is the Industry Trend

Industry research shows the trend is toward destination RVing. They describe this as having your RV parked in the same campground for an entire season. Instead of you taking the RV and heading out somewhere, you drive to the already parked and set up RV to spend time in it.

I've noticed this with full-time RVers, too, that a surprising number of full-timers do not have a vehicle that they can move their RV with; they simply stay in one park for extended periods. This is clearly apparent in the snowbird destination parks in the southern states, though, I don't know that it is a new trend there. Destination RVing full-timers may have two RVs -- one at a park or home base in a northern state and a second one where it is warmer.

Stay in Touch with a Travel Blog or Website

You don't need to be a computer whiz to have your own travel blog or website. You can keep your family and friends up to date on your travels, share pictures, interact with friends. And, if you are so inclined, you can make some money with it. An easy way to make your website or blog is with a website building program that takes care of all the background and techie stuff for you. I use and recommend SBI, which, by the way, is about to release an update that is going to make it even smoother and easier.

Motorhome Renovation: The Story of the New Fixer-Upper RV Continues

The motorhome renovation story continues…. Wouldn't it be fun to buy a brand new RV instead of a fixer-upper? Oh, wait, we have bought brand new ones and Bob still did major work on them.

Come to think of it, I've never seen an RV that is exactly like we'd want it. And, even those top end ones seem to come from the dealer needing warranty work done on them right away. This one has the advantage of being cheap to begin with. Let's see what progress Bob shares today.

Your RV Life and Travel Questions Answered

We've answered many questions on the website. Here are some of them:

Dogs and Full-time RVing How many RV parks allow you to bring dogs? We would like to start this year as RVers, but have dogs that are a part of the family and they would have to go, too. How receptive are the parks?

RV Depreciation Why the small depreciation on used RVs? As a single woman, I've been looking at Class B vehicles, such at RoadTrek and other vans, but even the used models cost $30,000 - $50,000. Why isn't RV depreciation as severe as it is with a new car?

Firewood for Camping How do we get firewood for camping now that we have a motorhome? We just purchased a 36' class a motorhome. We do not intend to use a toad of any type. We previously camped in a tent and traveled by car in our journeys. With a car, we would collect firewood every day or two at the many campgrounds we stayed at that did not deliver firewood. Now that we won't have a car, what tips can you offer for us to get firewood short of bringing it with us, which can be unlawful in some places? Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Picture Frame What is good to use for picture framing in an RV? My father is now a full time RV-er and I have a portrait of his granddaughter for him. I am not sure what type of frame to get him since he'll be traveling and living in the RV full-time now. What do you suggest?

Foul Smell in RV I have a foul smell in my RV. I went camping this weekend in a travel trailer and there was an awful, foul smell whenever the water turned on. My camper is brand new. Do you know what could cause the terrible smell or what I can do to get rid of it?

Preventing Generator Theft This concerns preventing generator theft. We are in the process of buying two 2000 watt Honda generators. My question is, How do you keep them from being stolen? We have a 27 foot 5th wheel.

Parking Near Salt Water We are worried about parking near salt water. We are buying a Montana 5th wheel and want to camp very close to the beach so we can walk to the sand and sea. However, after chatting with several others on other forums, we have become concerned about the salt-sea mist, salt-sea air/wind, and salt-sea fog.

Cost Cutting RV Tips

What tips do you have for cutting the cost of RVing? How do you use your RV to save money on vacation? What frugal tips can you share to help your fellow RVers be able to afford to get out there on the open roads?

Read the tips that have already been shared, then hit the "Comment" button on the website page and share your tips.

~ This one is from Linda: We get free wifi at rest areas. All the rest areas in Texas have it. It's available in other states, too. It doesn't cost anything to pull in and check to see if they do or not.

~ Suzy and Mark shared this one: Drive slower! We spend less on gas because we slowed down and now drive the speed limit. You wouldn't think this would make much difference, but it does.
