Alaska Home Base

(Michelle asks...)

Does anyone use Alaska as their state domicile? What are the pros and cons of doing so? We're trying to find the best state overall for our state residency while full-time RVing and wonder if AK would be good.

Coleen, the RVing editor replies:

Consider South Dakota Instead of Alaska

Hi Michelle,

We are Alaskans. Alaska is a beautiful place. The people are wonderful. The fishing is terrific. The summers are cool in most of the state. Winter is, well, a winter wonderland. The wildlife viewing and scenery are spectacular. We are proud to call Alaska home.

But, I don't recommend it for RVers who are choosing a state of residence or domicile.

Why?

For one thing, Alaska is a very long ways away from most of the US. That's an important thing to keep in mind when considering how often you would be in the state. Getting here and back from any other state is a major trip.

Mail sometimes comes to Alaska by barge. Perhaps you've heard the expression, "On a slow boat to China." As you wait for your packages to arrive, you might wonder if it is that same boat.

I recommend that full-time RVers consider South Dakota for their home base.

Specifically, I recommend they use the Rapid City, SD, The UPS Store for their mail forwarding. We have an article on this website that explains why.
