El Jefe's Restaurant and Cantina, the Port Mansfield Local's Café and Bar

El Jefe's Restaurant and Cantina is our "go to" place for breakfast in Port Mansfield. It's casual and friendly. The food and view are excellent. Breakfast tacos are generous and moderately priced.

Breakfast Taco

When we stay in a community for a few weeks, we invariable find a favorite restaurant. It's one that we're comfortable returning to day in and day out. It's about the feeling of being "at home" there, as much as it is about the food. In Port Isabel, it was Las Cabos. Here in Port Mansfield, it is El Jefe's.

We hesitated a bit about going to a cantina for breakfast. But, we were hungry! This small bar and cafe turned out to be a good choice. It serves as a local gathering spot to discuss everything from politics to what is going on in the community.

El Jefe's sits on the water's edge. Whether you are eating inside or outside on the deck, you can watch the boaters and the birds. Standing on the deck looking out onto the water, is incredibly relaxing, with an almost Caribbean resort feel.

Food wise, it's hard to go wrong with the breakfast taco. It's an oversized flour tortilla, filled with scrambled eggs and your choice of two other items. Our standard is adding beans and bacon. The refried beans aren't just a filler -- they are seasoned and flavorful. For a change, try the bacon and avocado.

We haven't made it to the cantina during the official lunch or dinner hours. But, if it isn't overly busy, the owner will make anything on the menu that isn't deep fried earlier in the day. I had beef tacos one morning and they were excellent. We had hamburgers one morning, and they were very good, too.

There's street parking for RVs in the winter. If you are driving a large motorhome or pulling a trailer, parking may be harder to come by during the busy summer months.
