Holding Tank Problems

by Tina

We have maggots coming into our toilet. We are full time campers now and have a terrible situation. Have you ever heard of anything like this. I am freaking out.... We clean the toilet often. We have camped for over 20 years and never had this problem before. Please try to help me with this.

Holding Tanks
by: Coleen, the RVing editor

Hi Tina,

I've heard of all sorts of holding tank problems, but not this one.

The first thing that comes to mind is that you are keeping your toilet and tank too clean. Using a lot of cleaners, chemicals, and disinfectants disrupts the normal balance of things. Killing the good bugs necessary for a healthy tank makes way for those we don't want.

Are you leaving your dump valves open? Again, I don't know if that would have anything to do with this particular problem. But, it can cause problems of the liquids draining leaving solids to build up and get stuck. One problem leads to another, so it might be affecting things.

If anyone else had had this happen or knows more about this, please chime in and post your help.

Maggots in the Toilet

Yes, I have had that problem, too. Are you using well water? I kept cleaning the tank and flushing it to get rid of mine. I believe mine was from the well water. Really never found out what caused it.

Tank Maggots

Are they coming up from the black water tank? Or maybe from the water storage tank in the back of the toilet? Are they showing up after you flush? They might be hatching up in the rim area!

Maybe you need to do a chlorine flush of the water (pressure) lines to kill them in the toilet tank and rim. Just a thought and suggestion. If they're in the black tank, 1/2 fill it and add a gallon of bleach. Then go for a drive. That'll kill them.

Maggots in Holding Tank

I, too, just noticed maggots on the floor around our RV toilet. I am a clean freak, so I was bothered by this. I did leave my tank open for 3 weeks (we forgot to close it).

We have our trailer in an RV park and hadn't been back till this weekend. I think they are in the tank but were crawling up a vent in the bottom of the toilet (where it meets the floor). I'm not sure.

I put about four cups of bleach and lots of water and also let the bleach water overflow and drain in the overflow hole on the bowl.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. I won't be back for two more weeks. I hope they're gone.
