Pancho's Mexican Restaurant for Authentic Mexican Food Lunch

Pancho's Mexican Restaurant is the most authentic Mexican cafe we've been to since we've been in Port Isabel, TX. Excellent steak rancheros, homemade chips, good service, and reasonable prices.

Actually, it is probably the most authentic Mexican restaurant we've been in this entire trip. We tend to go out for breakfast. But, the bright yellow-orange and purple building housing Pancho's caught our attention. So did the bright red and yellow sandwich board signs advertising the daily lunch special.

Turns out they have not one, but more than half a dozen, $4.99 lunch specials. While there was a hamburger among them, most were Mexican food. Our lunch specials started with a basket of homemade chips, served warm, and green salsa.

I chose the chili relleno special, pictured below. My lunch came with three stuffed poblano peppers, refried beans, Mexican rice, and tortillas. Two of the chilies were filled with a spicy, shredded chicken. The other was stuffed with cheese. We liked them -- a lot.

Pancho's Chile Rellenos Mexican Lunch

Bob had the steak rancheros. The pieces of beef were fork tender. The meat tasted like it had been slowly simmered for hours, all the while absorbing the flavors of the sauce. The mildly piquant sauce was chunky with diced onion and peppers. This special also came with refried beans, Mexican rice, and tortillas. We liked it -- even more than the chile rellenos.

Pancho's Mexican Restaurant is small and casual. A large aquarium with goldfish has center stage. The TV was on, tuned to a Spanish station. When we came in, they added the closed captioning, in English. Our waitress was quiet, attentive, and competent.

There's reasonable parking for RVs. The sign on the door says they'll deliver, so if you want Mexican food, but don't want to leave the campground, you can still have it.

Pancho's Mexican Restaurant is local. It shouldn't be confused with the Pancho's Mexican Buffet chain. This Pancho's isn't a buffet, however, they do have an all-you-can eat tacos meal.

I enjoyed my lunch, but regretted that I'd played it safe by ordering the chile rellenos instead of something new to me. I think that means we'll need to return to try some of the other lunch specials.
