Life As We Live It ... on the road with Coleen and Bob

Where In the World Are Coleen and Bob?
(And Just What Are They Doing?)

We're enjoying the fun and sun in Port Isabel, Texas. We rented our RV site for a month. Not sure how long we will stay, but it's cheaper to rent by the month than it is to pay for two weeks.

Our site here has metered electricity. We are using an average of 2 kilowatts of electric a day. They are charging us 15 cents a KW, so that amounts to about 30 cents a day.

This trip is interesting electricity-wise. We have full solar systems on our travel trailers, so we seldom had or used electrical hookups in the past. Taking our vintage motorhome on this trip was a rather spur of the moment decision. We only have two smaller solar panels on it (and they are over 20 years old) and only two batteries. We've missed the freedom having a good solar system provides.

What's Bob doing today? Measuring the roof to see where we can put more panels and checking on websites to see where would be a good place to buy them.

We welcome your questions and comments.

Wherever you are in your travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

RV Life and Travel Tip

Renting a motorhome for a week or two of vacation is not going to show you if you'd like full-time RVing. I've known people who loved RV vacations, but couldn't handle full-time RV living. On the flip side, Bob and I love RV life and travel, but a vacation? Give us a resort where we don't cook, clean, or do housework, please.

Sierra Mobile RV, Port Isabel, TX, for RV Parts, RV Repairs, and RV Services

We needed a new vent cover for our motorhome. I remembered seeing an RV parts and service business on the highway coming into town. So, that's where we headed.

Bob said he thought the prices at Sierra's seemed competitive with even the largest RV and camping supply stores. I did a quick online price check with a big camping store and was pleasantly surprised. We paid considerably less than the prices I found online.

The Cowboy and Hobo Show Have Snowbirds Toe Tapping and Clapping to the Music

Cactus Willie, Boxcar Bob, and The Drifter entertained us last night at the Park Center RV Park. The rec hall was full of winter Texans. Willie Nelson to The Animals, these three talented performers played, sang, and told an occasional joke. They delighted this crowd of mostly senior snowbirds.

RV Life and Travel Tip

Keep your plastic grocery bags corralled by stuffing them into a milk jug. Cut a hole in a half-gallon or gallon plastic milk jug about two inches across. Some of them already have an indentation there. Wad up your plastic bags and poke them in. When you need one, just pull it out. You can keep an amazing number of bags this way in very little space.

Your RV Life and Travel Questions Answered

Dry Hookups

~~ A reader asks: What does a dry hookup mean? Is there elec, but no water?

~~ I answered in part: A dry hookup RV site means there is an electrical hookup, but no fresh water hookup and no sewer hookup.

RV Life and Travel Tip

Cheap disposable gloves are great for picking up after your dog. Put one on, pick up, turn it inside out while taking it off. What you've collected stays inside, untouched. You can recycle your plastic grocery bags for the same chore. However, one of these gloves is small and compact and discretely fits into your wallet or pocket.

Los Cabos Mexican Restaurant: A Port Isabel Favorite for Mexican Breakfast

Los Cabos Mexican Restaurant just took the number one spot on our list of Port Isabel places to eat. Tasty food, friendly and efficient service, can't-be-beat prices, generous servings, and clean.

One of the things that stood out is that the customers are a mix of locals and winter Texans.
