Life As We Live It ... on the road with Coleen and Bob

Where In the World Are Coleen and Bob?
(And Just What Are They Doing?)

Seems like a lot of RVers are well into their spring migrations to northern climes. Not us. We are still in southern Texas. Port Mansfield is pleasant. Our Alaska home-base is still covered in snow. We'll probably stick around here for at least another week or so.

Wherever you are in your travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

Correction

The link in last week's e-zine that was supposed to go to the Port Isabel, Texas, sunset over the water was wrong. I'm sorry about that. This link should take you to that article and the pictures.

Bayview R-V Park, a Peaceful Hide-a-Way for Fishermen and Wildlife Watchers

Bayview R-V Park sits in Port Mansfield, TX, a small fishing community on the Gulf Coast. I love finding inexpensive, quiet campgrounds like this, where we share the park with local wildlife.

RVing Tip

If traveling with a pet that is on a prescription, you may be able to have your veterinarian mail it to you. This can save the cost of an office visit to the vet, as well as the hassle of locating one in an area where you aren't familiar. If the actual medication can't be mailed, your vet may be able to FAX the prescription to a vet or pharmacy for you.

Your RV Life and Travel Questions Answered

Cost for Full-time RVing

~~ Mike R. asks: What does it cost for full-time RVing? Filled with wanderlust, we're considering the full-time RV lifestyle. Assuming we have a trailer and a truck, on average, what does it cost per month to live this lifestyle (we have limited financial resources)?

~~ I answered in part: It can cost less than it does to live in a traditional home or apartment. That was how it was for us our first years of full-time RV life and travel. We spent less in every budget category than we did when we owned a regular house, including fuel.

Watkins Summit Group Bus. Info

We need to earn a living, even while we are RVing. Part of our income comes from my being an Independent Watkins Associate (ID #362289) within the Summit Group. You could be one, too.

RV Life and Travel Tip

Before heading out to do your laundromat, pour your liquid detergent onto a towel or other item in the laundry. That way, you don't need to carry the jug of detergent there and back.

Generator for RV AC

~~ Barbara M. writes: I would like to know if the 4000 watt Champion generator that I just bought is going to be enough to run my AC in my Keystone Montana.

~~ I answered in part: It depends in part on how the generator is rated. Some get their ratings from their maximum output. Trouble is, they can't maintain that output for more than a few minutes. Your better generators are likely to have what I consider a truer rating.

The Caretaker Gazette

One way to cut your RVing expenses is to work as a property caretaker. In some instances, you don't have assigned duties. The property owner just wants someone to be on the property, so that it doesn't look abandoned. The Caretaker Gazette can help you find all sorts of caretaking positions.

RV Height

~~ Mike asks: Is an RV height of 9' 6" getting too high for many places? At that height, need to be very careful, I'm sure. Like I know driving through a fast food place would present problems, but did wonder about all the other canopies such as banks and more.

~~ I answered in part: Your RV height is right at that point where you can sneak under many things -- but don't count on it. Some businesses also have an arm bar across the entrance to keep taller vehicles out. When we had a pickup camper, Bob put an antenna on the cab that was the height of the camper. As long as the antenna cleared, we knew the camper would, also.

RVing Tip

Use a small magazine rack or file folder wall pocket for local information. Use it as a central place to store tourist attraction brochures, the campground sitemap and rules, coupons for local restaurants, a local map, area travel guides, etc.
