Life As We Live It ... on the road with Coleen and Bob

Where In the World Are Coleen and Bob?
(And Just What Are They Doing?)

You know how the things around you become commonplace and you start to take them for granted. That's happened to me regarding Alaska. Oh, sure, we still stand outside and gaze up at the mountain views. We still marvel at the state's beauty. We still look for moose and eagles as we drive down the road. We still see that Alaska's people and way of life are different from those Outside. But, what I haven't done lately is look at it as a visitor to our state and share it with you.

That's what I'm doing in this issue. And, what we are doing on our website. So, come along and enjoy some RVing in Alaska.

Wherever you are in your travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

RV Life and Travel Tip

Stay off the roads on the deadliest days of the year. Typically, these are holidays and the days right before and right after the holiday.

Take a Salmon Charter Out of Seward for a Fun Filled Day of Alaska Fishing

A salmon charter when the silvers are running ... what a way to spend a day on Alaska's icy waters. A Seward fishing trip makes a fine introduction to Alaska's salmon fishing.

Our arrival in Seward, Alaska, coincided with the days immediately prior to the Seward Silver Salmon Derby. It's one of Seward’s busiest times. The charters are usually booked full. Bob managed to get a spot on the Betty Lou, with Captain Joe Allen.

Watkins Summit Group Bus. Info

We need to earn a living, even while we are RVing. Part of our income comes from my being an Independent Watkins Associate (ID #362289) within the Summit Group. You could be one, too. Both Watkins and our Summit Group leaders are giving some freebies to new associates who start this month. The link below should take you to a page with the details.

Campgrounds In Alaska: Full Service RV Parks To Primitive Tent Camping Sites

Campgrounds in Alaska have one thing in common – spectacular views. Alaska has full service RV parks and primitive tent campsites. There's free overnight parking and waterfront resorts.

Some of the best deals are the city campgrounds. Both Homer and Seward have several campgrounds.

RVing Tip

Limit your driving time to a few hours a day. When you aren't pressing on too far, you aren't as stressed. That means you'll be more alert and feel better. Get situated in your campsite before you get tired and while it is still light outside. That sure beats doing it when it's dark and you are tired and worn out from a long day's drive.

Kasilof, AK ... Home of Iditarod Racers, Alaskan Salmon Fishing, and The Merc

Downtown Kasilof, AK is The Merc and the post office. At least that's what you see at first glance. Look closer, though, and you'll find great Alaskan salmon fishing and services for visitors.

The Merc is officially the Kasilof Mercantile and Rocky's Cafe. But, to locals, it's just "The Merc." And the menu … they name things after Alaskans and give them quirky descriptions. This morning for breakfast, we had the "Lance Mackey," named after the local dog-musher, now famous for winning the Iditarod dog sled race two years in a row.

Shower Facilities In Alaska For Travelers and Alaskans Without Indoor Plumbing

Shower facilities are readily available for travelers in Alaska. Between RVers and campers, and Alaskans without indoor plumbing, there's a demand for coin operated and public showers.

Not every Alaska home has an indoor bath room. Many Alaskan's don't have plumbing, with running water and flush toilets.

Reader Feedback

~~ Ginny writes: While we are in a different state or country we always make sure we know what the county is called (parish, borough, etc.). That way when emergency alerts our on the TV or radio we know where we are and what area is around us.

~~ I reply: Great tip, Ginny! Louisiana has parishes. Alaska has boroughs.
