Life As We Live It ... on the road with Coleen and Bob

Where In the World Are Coleen and Bob?
(And Just What Are They Doing?)

As the chill of fall sets in and we've turned on the heater, Bob and I are having frequent discussions about winter. Should we stay in Alaska or head to the sunny south?

The new article this week is the first in an on-going series, Free Things to Do In....

I finally got around to adding Facebook "Like" buttons to the website. You can now "Like" the entire site with the button on the top or bottom of left side navigation bar. You can also "Like" individual pages by using the button underneath the article. We'd appreciate the gesture!

Wherever you are in your travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

RVing Tip

RV vacationing is very different than full-time RV living. Full-time RVing is not full-time vacationing. Expecting it to be sets you up for major disappointment.

Lafayette, LA: Free Admission, Free Entertainment and Activities, and Free Wi-Fi

In Lafayette, LA, free activities include learning about the Cajun culture at the Cultural Center, playing disc golf and other sports, enjoying the parks, shopping for local foods. Free Wi-Fi, too. Here are some free things you can do:

• The Acadian Cultural Center - Music, food, the oil industry, the history of Cajuns -- those are some of the things that make up the culture of the area and they are some of the focal points of center displays.

• The Oil Center's Open Air Antique & Arts Market - The second Saturday of the month.

Watkins Summit Group Bus. Info

We need to earn a living, even while we are RVing. Part of our income comes from my being an Independent Watkins Associate (ID #362289) within the Summit Group. You could be one, too.

With fall baking and gift giving just around the corner, now is an excellent time to start. I'll gladly help you.

RV Life and Travel Tip

I don't have mixing bowls in my RV. Instead, I use saucepans. This cuts back on weight and saves cupboard space. It works quite well; the handle on the kettle makes it easy to hang on to it.

Your RV Life and Travel Questions Answered

Buying an Older, but Never Used RV

~~ Nerak asks: I am interested in buying an RV. I've found one that fits my price range and its size is perfect for my family and my vehicle. But, it is a 2007, "never been used." Should I be leery in such a purchase? I live in northern Canada and am hesitant because the owner said he had had it winterized, but then never used it. What kind of problems would one expect with an RV that had, "just sat in the yard" for four years?

~~ I answered in part: You may have just found yourself an excellent deal! An RV ages, though, even when it just sits there. Here are some things to be aware of and check:

• Fabric may be bleached by the sun if windows and vents were left uncovered. It's possible the fabric may look fine, but may be suffering from sun rot and will shred when used or washed.

• Batteries may have gone bad through age, phantom loads, or not being properly maintained.

• For motorhomes, there may be oxidation and degradation of the fuel and fluids.

Your RV Life and Travel Questions Answered

AK Canada Highway in May?

~~ An RVer asks: Since you traveled the AK Canada Highway in the spring, how are the roads in May to get to Alaska? We would enter through Calgary, just above Montana. Are RV parks open?

~~ I answered in part: Traveling the Alaska-Canadian Highway in May, you will likely find snow or construction -- or both. Expect there to be some bad spots. You'll find frost heaves and potholes.

However, it probably won't be nearly as bad as you've heard.

As for RV parks, you'll find them limited.
