Restaurants In Port Isabel, Texas: RVers Have Many Choices

Restaurants in Port Isabel, Texas, offer RVers and vacationers a mix of local cafes, fast food, and upscale eateries. Authentic Mexican and fresh seafood (especially shrimp) abounds.

Many of the restaurants in Port Isabel have specials for Winter Texans. Daily specials range from American breakfasts, to happy hour appetizers, to early bird dinners. Gray-haired breakfast eaters fill local cafes each morning throughout the snowbird season. The nightly all-you-can-eat fish and shrimp specials are also popular among RVers.

Much of Port Isabel has street parking. Even if the restaurant doesn't have a large parking lot, with our small motorhome, it is easy to find parking nearby.

Here's a list of the restaurants in Port Isabel that we know about:

Los Cabos Mexican and Seafood Restaurant
309 E Queen Isabella Blvd
Port Isabel, TX 78578
Phone: 956-943-3777

Los Cabos Mexican and Seafood Restaurant is our all around favorite eatery in Port Isabel. It rates high on food quality and quantity, service, local atmosphere, and price. There's something about it that is particularly welcoming. It's open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, seven days a week. Be sure to look for the boards with the breakfast and lunch specials, or ask to see the specials menu. They serve American breakfast, as well as huge flour tortilla tacos. Los Cabos is an excellent choice for both Mexican food and seafood. The bean soup that comes with every lunch and dinner is wonderful!

Isabel's Cafe
102 Port Road
Port Isabel, TX 78578
Ph: 956-943-5082

Isabel's Cafe ranks as our second favorite eatery in Port Isabel. We first went to Isabel's when it was still at the old location, on our first trip to Port Isabel in 1997. It is a family owned and operated cafe. The breakfast tortillas are huge, flour tortillas filled with your choice of meats or other fillings, and folded. The lunch specials can't be beat. This is one of the few places in town you can get a hamburger and fries or anything else from the menu whenever the restaurant is open. Open for breakfast and lunch, every day but Thursday. Rates high on food quality and quantity, service, price, and local diner atmosphere.

Los Tortugo's Seafood Market and Galley
1683 State Highway 100
Port Isabel, TX 78578
Ph: 956-943-5602

Los Tortugo's Seafood Market and Galley carries the tagline, "Family owned and operated from our boats to your table." Fresh seafood. Fresh shrimp, oysters, fish. The shrimp cocktail was a huge glass, brimful of fresh shrimp in cocktail sauce, garnished with sliced avocado, cilantro, and lime. To say it was delicious doesn't do it justice. The oyster poorboy sandwich was stuffed with fresh, sweet oysters, lightly breaded and deep-fried. The grilled shrimp were slightly blackened, mildly spicy, and sauteed with onions and peppers. I won't brag on the French fries, but with seafood this fresh, cooked to perfection, and served by gracious and welcoming servers, the fries didn't matter. The seafood market is on the main level, with most of the dining tables are upstairs. Los Tortugo's Seafood Market and Galley is a fresh seafood restaurant; I don't recall seeing any non-seafood entrees on the menu.

El Papa's
814 S Garcia St
Port Isabel, TX 78578
Phone: 956-943-7133

When we want to feast on all-you-can-eat shrimp or fish, we head to El Papa's on Friday night. The shrimp are fresh. The Wednesday night all-you-can-eat Mexican meal is also mighty tasty, but it temps a person to eat too much. These are served at your table, not buffet style. Service at El Papa's can be a bit slow when they are busy, but the food is worth the wait.

Manuel's Mexican Restaurant
313 E Maxan St.
Port Isabel, TX 78578
Ph: 956-943-1655

Manuel's Restaurant is another family owned and operated local eatery. Joe, the owner and his son are usually waiting tables. The flour tortillas are homemade, and possibly the best in town. The daily breakfast specials are a great deal. If you want a picture to impress your friends, order the Wet Con Tado Enchilada Wrap for breakfast -- one will easily feed two big eaters. They are open for breakfast and lunch every day but Monday. Manuel's can be crowded, and don't be surprised if you have to wait for a table.

Tokyo Express X Port
910 W. Hwy. 100 #123
Port Isabel, TX 78578
956-433-5266

Tokyo Express is the place to go for oriental food in Port Isabel. (As far as I know, it is the only Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, or other Asian restaurants in town.) It's fast food, with the entrees displayed on a steam table. Each order comes with fried rice or noodles (lo mien), plus two entrees of your choice. The food and prices are good, and the quantity is generous. Atmosphere is fast food, served in to-go containers, with community tables available for dining in the restaurant. Soup and egg rolls are available, as is limited sushi. Tokyo Express X Port is open every day for lunch and dinner.

Davey Jones Ice Cream Locker
116 N Garcia St
Port Isabel, TX 78578
Phone: 956-943-7447

Davey Jones Ice Cream Locker is located in the Pirate's Landing complex. It's a good place to get ice cream cones and walk around taking goofy pictures with the pirate statutes. They have appreciation cards for frequent customers. Davey Jones Ice Cream Locker also has fudge!

Nature's Creamery
413 E Maxan St
Port Isabel, TX 78578
Phone: 720-519-2192

Nature's Creamery has an all vegan menu of frozen confections and beverages. The vegan "ice cream" is available as hard pack or soft serve. We had the Pineapple Crush hard pack. The texture was definitely different from real ice cream that made with milk and cream. It was tasty. It was expensive. (We pay less for an entire carton of grocery store ice cream than we did for a single scoop.) Nature's Creamery has a walk-up window, with outdoor seating areas.

Will and Jacks Burger Shack and Beer Garden
413 E Maxan St
Port Isabel, TX 78578
Phone: 956-640-7440

Will and Jacks Burger Shack and Beer Garden makes big, juicy, steamed hamburgers. Dining is outside, on spool-tables, in a funky garden atmosphere. The one time we went, it was a fun place to sit back, have a beer and a burger, and make the most of island life. However, Will and Jacks Burger Shack now apparently welcomes dogs in the dining area, and seeing two scroungy dogs eating at the table certainly changed the vibe of the diner.

Most of the restaurants in Port Isabel have reasonable prices. The Mexican diners are inexpensive, especially compared to many other parts of the country. The service is generally good to excellent. English is a secondary language to some of the wait staff, so communication can occasionally be tricky.

Part of our enjoyment as RVers is eating out as we travel. It's a good way to learn about the local customs and local foods, and to meet the local people. We've patronized many of the Port Isabel, Texas, restaurants.
